War Memorials
Main School
The War Memorial is an integral part of both the building and school life. Every year on remembrance day a special service is held in front of the memorial in the main school for staff and S6 where an act of resolve is made.
The Great War claimed the lives of 179 former pupils. In memory of this, a war memorial was unveiled in the main entrance by the Secretary for Scotland in 1921. After the Second World War, another such memorial, in the form of two bronze plaques, was erected. This time with the names of nearly 180 former pupils engraved into it.
Forth from the homes of the servants of God worshipping in this place these gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1919.

The St.Oswald’s War Memorial
Surely the most tragic names (they are on both memorials) are those of the McGilp brothers: Archibald, Hugh and John. All educated at Boroughmuir, all worshiped at St Oswald’s, all served with the 9th battalion of the Royal Scots. Archibald and Hugh died as a result of their wounds. John was killed in action on 23rd April 1917 possibly during the capture of Roeux.
