National success for S2 writers
Alisa Matyunina and Jutta Katay-Fodor, both S2, have won two out of the ten national prizes for creative writing promoted by the prestigious Pushkin Prizes. The girls each entered a three-piece Folio of writing and attended a sparkling award ceremony at Archers’ Hall on Monday 6th May where Alisa was declared overall winner in Scotland. As part of their prize, both girls joined the other national winners and the two Russian winners [the competition runs in St. Petersburg, too] for a week-long writing course at Moniak Mhor near Inverness lead by the writers Diana Hendry and Gerry Cambridge. [See the girls’ writing.]
Many congratulations to both girls—a great success building on Luke James’ winning entry last year. What’s next for 2013–14: three winners?

S3 Coca Cola Trip
On the 30th of April twenty-eight Business Management students visited the Coca Cola Enterprises [CCE] bottling and distribution plant in East Kilbride with Mr Beattie and Miss Boag. A lovely day for the bus journey through to East Kilbride with no holds, so we arrived perfectly on time, and were greeted by Joanne Gabbay the Education Centre Manager.
On arrival everyone was issued with a High Visibility safety jackets before sitting down for a short video and presentation. We were told about the process of making Coca Cola from the arrival of raw materials, making and filling the bottles, packaging, storage and transportation. We were shown some examples of what can go wrong when making the bottles. Then they were given some information and a chance to ask questions about the many different products brands made by CCE — its not just Coca Cola!
Everyone can also now tell what day, time and where in the UK a bottle from CCE was made.
We then made our way to the walkway over one of the four production lines; unfortunately the line was not working. This is due to the fact that the production lines only run when they have orders because this week there was very little demand for 500ml bottles the line was off and instead they had scheduled in some essential maintenance work.
After this we had a short break and enjoyed a Capri-sun or water before completing our visit with a Brand mapping exercise which was completed very well by all with some examples as you can see.
This was an enjoyable trip which provided a valuable learning experience outside the classroom, unfortunate that we could not see the production line in action but this itself demonstrated a key point to the students about the external impacts on businesses in the current economic climate.

Kilgraston Inter-District Championships 2013
Congratulations to Matthew Grieve S3 and Finlay Glidden S4. The boys were recently members of the U15/U17 East of Scotland County Team which took part in the Scottish Inter-District Tennis Championships at Kilgraston School, Perthshire. The team had huge success over the weekend, they topped their group table, which took them through to the finals. They were eventual runners-up to a very strong West of Scotland side.
Well done!

Quick on the Draw Winners
Judging has taken place of all the ‘Quick on the Draw’ drawings and the three winners chosen by the school management team each gain 100 house points towards the house competition. For those who are unfamiliar with this, Quick on the Draw is the activity where members of staff volunteered to give up a period of non-teaching time to sit and model for an art class and all art classes from S1 to S6 completed a portrait drawing of them in a period. The resulting hundreds of drawings were then displayed in a wall of drawings in the atrium creating a ‘Portrait of Boroughmuir’.This year’s Quick on the draw winners were:
- Cameron Bonella 1H2 Mr Brandie — 100 points to Hartington
- Duncan Reid Mackie 2W2 Ms Draper — 100 points to Westhall
- Phoebe Mackie 3V Mr Dempster — 100 points to Viewforth

S2 Junior chef Cookery competition
This competition is an annual event which has been running in Boroughmuir High school for 15+ years. All two-hundred S2 pupils are involved.
Pupils are given the task of developing their own recipe to create an original dish which could be sold in the school dining hall. It may be sweet or savoury and form any part of a meal. The dish must be made within the allocated time slot of one hour.
Potential recipes are indentified by pupils, time plans are completed . Each and every pupil completes a dish of their own choice, two winners from each of the ten classes go forward to the final. The final is judged by the headteacher and a professional chef from a local restaurant.
In previous years a main course has been a winner , but this year it was a side dish.
2013 winning dishes were:
- Smoked Aubergine Maaram Ehsau
- Raspberry Blush Cake Sheena Milligan
- Fish & Chips Lewis McLellan

Visit from Celebrity Chef Nick Nairn
Health and Food Technology Department were delighted to welcome celebrity chef Nick Nairn and Jennifer Robertson from Quality Meat Scotland to work with S5 & 6 hospitality pupils. The demonstration was filmed by the BBC as part of Landward programme which will be aired on 17th May at 7.00pm on BBC 2.
Nick was working with Quality Meat Scotland who donate £100 voucher for fresh meat to schools.
He demonstrated the making of Scotch Broth using Shin of Lamb. Some pupils were able to use their food preparation skills to help Nick prepare the vegetables for the soup and everyone was able to help with the tasting afterwards. It was a superb opportunity for our pupils to work with such a well respected chef who is so passionate about raising the profile of cooking skills for Healthy Eating for All.

The S3 Profile
The S3 profile is a summary of a young person’s best achievements in their first three years of secondary school. It is produced by the young person with support from their Support for Pupils teacher. Profiles are primarily aimed at young people and their parents, and draw together a range of information about a young person’s learning. It is one of the ways in which a learner’s achievements can be recognised.
In Boroughmuir S3 pupils are already working on their draft profiles during class time. The final profile can be hand written, however some pupils may wish to download a new copy of their profile and type in the information they have collected. These profiles will be completed and sent home in May 2013.
